Known for its rolling topography along the Mississippi, tight-knit neighborhoods, and beautifully preserved historic landmarks, Saint Paul has been nicknamed the City of Neighborhoods and the City of Seven Hills. The state’s capital is home to over 287,000 residents, 160 parks, a network of bike trails and walking paths, and Summit Avenue—the longest remaining stretch of residential Victorian architecture in the nation. Saint Paul ranks third in the nation for its number of 4+ year higher education institutions per capita; is home to many large financial and health care-sector employers; and boasts a thriving immigrant population that brings vitality and culinary splendors to many city neighborhoods.

When it comes to nightlife, Saint Paul specializes in the authentic neighborhood pub/bar scene. Dozens of popular locales bring in visitors from across the cities to enjoy local brews, delicious food, live music, and a friendly atmosphere. Sports fans throng to the Xcel Center for Minnesota Wild hockey games and to Midway Stadium to enjoy a homespun Saint Paul Saints baseball game. The city’s numerous theaters and Ordway Center for the Performing arts bring the symphony, opera, dance, music, and theatrical performance to thousands of people every year.

Saint Paul is known for its great retail-oriented streets. On Grand Avenue, Selby Avenue, Ford Parkway, and West Seventh, you can find scores of independent businesses, diverse restaurants, and other neighborhood services. University Avenue, Suburban Avenue, and Sunray Mall are home to many larger retailers too. See a list of Saint Paul neighborhood retail areas.

Get oriented

The city of St. Paul is divided into 17 planning districts, each of which are represented by a District Council. The district council planning process was created over thirty years ago, to support neighborhood involvement in city decision-making. Each district council is composed of multiple, smaller neighborhoods, with an unofficial count of 127 neighborhoods citywide. We’re using the planning district boundaries to identify Saint Paul’s neighborhoods, but our neighborhood pages also include the names of the smaller neighborhoods within the district boundaries.

“There are lots of reasons why my wife, children, and I love living near campus. One important reason is that we can be a one car family. It saves us thousands of dollars a year, and we get the satisfaction of living in an environmentally sensible way. The transit service in this part of the city works really well for us.”

- Calder Hibbard,
Minnesota Forest Resources Council and resident of Southeast Como
