Bancroft is a small but vibrant residential community in South Minneapolis, consisting mostly of single family dwellings built before 1940 that are owner-occupied, sit on tree-lined streets, and are affordably-priced.  Neighborhood commercial services are available along Bloomington Avenue and 38th street and a new Fire Arts Center is in the works in the 38th and Chicago area. For residents who like recreation, Bancroft lies just blocks north of Lake Nokomis, the Hiawatha Golf Course and the scenic Minnehaha Creek. The Bancroft Neighborhood is located just minutes south of downtown Minneapolis with convenient access via Interstate 35W, the Hiawatha Corridor and is also close to the airport and Bloomington via Cedar Avenue.

History

The neighborhood was named for Bancroft Elementary School, one of the oldest education buildings still in operation in the Minneapolis School District (built in 1912).  The urban history of the Bancroft Neighborhood dates back to the early teens through the 1930's. In the 1920's, Bancroft residents would hop on the Bloomington or Cedar Avenue street cars to go downtown or to work and services were conveniently located within the neighborhood.

Residential blocks in Bancroft are lined with shade trees and boast affordable homes with historic character.  Many homes in the neighborhood were built before the Second World War.
