Popular arts venues such as Brave New Workshop, Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, The Jungle Theater, the Soo Visual Arts Center, and the Highpoint Center for Printmaking call the neighborhood home. History

Lowry Hill East began its life as a community in the 1880s with the arrival of Thomas Lowry’s public transportation system, the horse-drawn streetcar line. Within the larger Calhoun-Isles community, Lowry Hill East’s housing was the first to be developed.

Housing Styles and Types

Lowry Hill East has a diversity of housing ranging from elegant turn-of-the-century residences in Victorian-era styles (some of which remain single-family homes, others have been converted into multiple-unit housing) to modest working class homes. There are also large, modern apartment buildings and new loft and condominium buildings throughout the neighborhood.

• Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association—is the official neighborhood organization.
• Lyn-Lake Business Association—exists to enhance business relationships and activity in the Lyndale Avenue and Lake Street area of South Minneapolis.
• Uptown Association--is a nonprofit trade association, which promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, attractive, well-maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area.
