CARAG is a distinctive and exciting city neighborhood located just minutes from downtown Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes- including Lake Calhoun which is within walking distance. The neighborhood includes a mix of single family homes, small and large apartment buildings, churches, a park and small businesses. The CARAG area is well known because part of the community lies within the trendy Uptown and Lyn Lake business nodes—giving residents and visitors many opportunities to eat and shop at unique establishments as well as visit art and theater spaces.

History

CARAG is well established with three-fourths of its homes built before 1920. CARAG, along with the other neighborhoods of the Calhoun-Isles community, was established as a suburb of Minneapolis with residential development following the streetcar.

Housing Styles and Types

Most of CARAG’s homes were built before the Second World War, in a variety of housing styles including Foursquares, Arts and Crafts, and other period-revival styles. The neighborhood also has a mix of multi-unit properties available for rent and sale including low-rise townhouse style buildings, duplexes, historic apartment buildings, and new construction.

Public Facilities

• Bryant Square Recreation Center—offers year-round recreational opportunities for people of all ages.
• Bryant Square Park--Come to the park in the summer to cool off in the wading pool and warm up in the winter with a hockey game or ice skating on a rink established in 1913. POPS (Public Outdoor Performance Space) is a small amphitheatre located in a natural hillside south of the recreation center.

CARAG is not taking new applications for these programs, as waiting lists currently exist.

• Calhoun Area Residents Action Group (CARAG) is the official neighborhood organization and offers many opportunities for residents to get involved in community life.
• Lyn-Lake Business Association—exists to enhance business relationships and activity in the Lyndale Avenue and Lake Street area of South Minneapolis.
• Uptown Association--is a nonprofit trade association, which promotes Uptown as a safe, prosperous, accessible, attractive, well-maintained and environmentally responsible commercial and residential area.
