History

Following the expansion of Minneapolis’ streetcar network along Lowry Avenue North, residential housing development was spurred in what came to be known as the Folwell neighborhood. It’s named after the first president of the University of Minnesota and past president of the Minneapolis Park Board, Dr. William W. Folwell. Residential development occurred largely after 1917 in architectural styles that were popular during that period.

Housing Styles and Types

Built largely in the second decade of the 20thcentury, the Folwell neighborhood is primarily single family homes, built in a traditional neighborhood form. A majority of the homes are built in a bungalow or craftsman style and are either one or one-and-a-half stories in height. Alleys are prominent throughout the neighborhood with access to garages that are detached from the main house.

Neighborhood Voices

Folwell is a great gem of a neighborhood in the larger Camden community surrounding beautiful Folwell park. The neighborhood is quiet and residential but is close to coffee shops, several restaurants, and shopping. Being centrally located it's easy to get anywhere in the Twin Cities from Folwell and commuting is easy with downtown being a 12 minute car or bus ride away. Folwell is a great place to call home!

“Sheridan in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District has a delightful cluster of restaurants, galleries, and other night life along 13th Avenue. It’s close to downtown by bus and walkable to the river. An all-volunteer neighborhood group keeps us connected, with the SNO Ball, Ice Cream SNOcial and other fun gatherings.”
