Windom Print

Located on Minneapolis’ shared border with Richfield, the Windom neighborhood boasts well-built two and three-bedroom homes, most of which pre-date the 1940s. The neighborhood has possibly the best access in the City to surrounding suburbs, including Richfield and Edina, as well as to the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport. There is a variety of shopping opportunities in the neighborhood, with locally owned businesses along Lyndale and Penn Avenues and national retailers and industrial businesses located close to the highways. The neighborhood also boasts excellent access to recreational opportunity along Minnehaha Creek Parkway and the Chain of Lakes in Minneapolis.

Boundaries and Zip Code

North: Diamond Lake Road/West 54th Street
South: State Highway 62
East: Interstate 35W
West: Lyndale Avenue South

As the streetcar system expanded further south, opportunity for residential development became inevitable. The Windom neighborhood was named after William Windom, a United States Senator from Minnesota in the mid- to late- 1800s.

Housing Styles and Types

Windom offers a full range of housing choices, with a majority designed as single-family homes and duplexes, however nearly 40% of housing in the neighborhood are multi-family units. The single-family homes and duplexes are laid out in a grid-like pattern with trees and sidewalks lining the streets. Most homes are one or one-and-a-half stories and architecturally eclectic in style. It appears most homes were built prior to 1940 as Minneapolis was expanding further south with the streetcar system. Multi-family units are built closer to major transportation corridors and are primarily from the 1970s.
