The city’s “first neighborhood” is now one of its hottest.

Quiet, nature-filled streets by day, an urban entertainment scene by night, Marcy-Holmes is a welcome mix of old and new, traditional and trendy. Conveniently located between downtown Minneapolis and the University of MN along the Mississippi River, you’ll find many small shops, as well as an array of nationally recognized restaurants and art galleries here. Marcy Open School, a student-centered K-8 school that encourages learning through the arts, draws many great families to the neighborhood as well. Marcy-Holmes is part of the University District Partnership Alliance.

History

Marcy-Holmes was first a home to Native Americans living alongside “Minne-haha”, later named St. Anthony Falls by explorer Father Louis Hennepin. The Mississippi River and the falls provided waterpower for lumber and milling businesses here, as well as an attractive site for the growing city of St Anthony. Eventually merged with the city of Minneapolis in 1872, this area had schools, churches businesses and homes starting in the 1840’s – even the University of Minnesota, established in 1851.

Housing Styles and Types

Although most of the housing stock here predates 1950, Marcy-Holmes has recently seen development of riverfront apartments and condominiums in modern loft styles. The neighborhood has an eclectic mix of period architectural styles (Victorian, American Colonial, Arts and Crafts) and a variety of dwelling types (rooming houses, fraternities and sororities, apartments, co-ops, duplexes and single family homes).

“My husband and I moved to Minneapolis from San Diego. Most people think we got it backwards, but we wouldn't live anywhere else. Minneapolis + St. Paul have great museums, theater, city living, and the great outdoors. Our son's first word was 'duck' thanks to our proximity to Minnehaha Creek.”
