The Elliot Park neighborhood is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Minneapolis. It has a unique urban flair and much of its original historic fabric is still visible throughout the neighborhood. Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. staff and community volunteers work together to broaden economic opportunities and to strengthen the cultural diversity that defines the people who live and work here. Small businesses liven up the community and include a cozy coffee house and a funky restored diner. The neighborhood is adjacent to downtown and is home to several major employers—making it easy to live close (and even in walking distance) to work. ImagesBoundaries and Zip CodeNorth: 5th Street S HistorySections of Elliot Park were platted as early as 1856 and by the 1890’s Elliot Park was a fashionable downtown neighborhood. When Cottage Hospital opened it began a trend that established Elliot Park as one of the leading medical areas of the city. That trend continues today with Hennepin County Medical Center, Augustana Care Center, Benedictine Health Care Center of Minneapolis and numerous other neighborhood health and service institutions. Two parks were established in 1883, (named for their benefactors-Elliot Park and Franklin Steele Square), making them the second and third parks in the city and adding to the desirability of residential living in this downtown east neighborhood. Additional history can be found on our website: www.elliotpark.org Housing Styles and TypesIn the late 1800’s mansions sprang up along Park Avenue (The Hinkle Murphy mansion remains today as a restored historic site repurposed into an active office center). As Minneapolis grew rising land values spurred construction of brick and stone three story apartment buildings throughout the neighborhood. Some, such as the Rappahannock condominiums and the Roselle apartments, still stand and are among the oldest residential buildings in the Twin Cities. A cluster of Victorian residences survive today in the southeastern section of the neighborhood and numerous churches remain in the northwestern blocks.
