Field Regina Northrop is conveniently located less than 5 miles from downtown Minneapolis just east of 35W, roughly midway between Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis. Our neighborhood is bordered to the south by Minnehaha Creek, along which runs a path for walking, running, in-line skating or biking. The business district at 48th and Chicago is home to restaurants ranging from Mexican to Sushi and businesses ranging from hardware to tennis supplies. McRae Park and Recreation Center is the focal point for a number of youth activities; and in the spring the park serves as the location where the neighborhood holds a festival to celebrate the diversity of its residents.

Field Regina Northrop is a place with great neighbors who help take care of one another. Housing is a quaint mix of homes in a variety of price ranges, beautifully landscaped and well cared for. There is ample green space, parks and play fields and wonderful retailers and restaurants with personal service and a small town feel.

History

The area now called Field Regina Northrop (FRN) Neighborhood was part of the first land acquired by the United States in what eventually became Minnesota. In the 1920’s the area was still mainly rural but there were two main commercial districts in FRN - one at 48th and Chicago and the other at 48th and Fourth Avenue – and both were classic examples of the "streetcar corner" that grew up at regular nodes along streetcar lines. In 1975, the South Chicago Avenue Business Alliance was formed to guide the future of 48th and Chicago and the organization has been instrumental in attracting both public and private development funds to the corner and exerts peer pressure on the area's businesses to maintain consistently high levels of service.

Housing Styles and Types

There were two major building spurts that created many of the houses found in the Field Regina Northrop (FRN) Neighborhood. The first was in the 1920's and 30's, characterized by the use of stucco, with larger two-storied homes (frequently Tudor style) built on Portland and Park avenues, 2nd and 3rd avenues south of 46th Street, and along the north side of Minnehaha Creek; and the second occurring after WW II, characterized by story-and-a-half starter homes often in brick or with brick accents.

Getting Involved

The Field Regina Northrop Neighborhood Group (FRNNG) had its initial roots in the creation in April 1965 of the Field Neighborhood Group (FNG), which quickly evolved into the Field Regina Neighborhood Group (FRNG) later that year. More recently, under the city's Neighborhood Revitalization Program, the Northrop neighborhood joined in and the number of programs undertaken by the group has greatly expanded. News

The Field Regina Northrop Neighborhood Group publishes the “Close To Home” newsletter six times a year. It is distributed free to all households in the neighborhood and can be viewed online at the organization's website www.frnng.org.
