Armatage is a predominantly residential neighborhood, located in a quiet corner of Southwest Minneapolis. The neighborhood is conveniently close to downtown Minneapolis, the lakes, the airport, Mall of America and great local shops. Penn Avenue is home to most of our commercial activity, with several unique shops selling everything from yarn to hardware and Café Maude, a popular gathering spot where neighbors and visitors get together. Armatage Park boasts beautiful mature shade trees, tennis courts, ball fields and kids play equipment.

The Armatage Neighborhood was originally part of Richfield, but was annexed to Minneapolis in the mid-1920s. Homes in the neighborhood began to rise up in the 1940s, and by 1960 most of the neighborhood was established. In 1952, the Armatage Community School was built and named in recognition of a distinguished leader by the name of Maude Armatage.

Housing Styles and Types

The majority of housing in the neighborhood was built between 1949 and 1969, while about 5 percent of the dwellings were built before World War II. Most homes are rambler style or story and a half style.

Home Purchase/Home Improvement Incentives

Under this program, the Armatage Neighborhood Association (ANA) is offering NRP funds for home improvements to owner-occupied and absentee-owned properties. 4% low-interest loans are available for exterior and eligible interior improvements as well as energy efficiency upgrades. This program does not have income limits.

Getting Involved

The Armatage Neighborhood Association (ANA) holds general meetings on the third Tuesday of the month, where neighbors work together to form a powerful force for neighborhood stability and planned change.

The ANA also has open committees for residents to participate in and bring the housing strategies to life. Whether you are new to the neighborhood or have lived here for many years, now is a great time to get involved!
