Tangletown, named for its graceful, curving streets, is primarily a residential neighborhood but is also home to a number of neighborhood businesses including restaurants, gift shops, and convenience stores. The neighborhood is walkable and safe and residents celebrate events like Earth Day and the 4th of July in Fuller Park—which is at the center of community. Major city bus lines run along each border of the neighborhood, and major roads offer easy access to the rest of the city including downtown only 10 minutes away. ImagesBoundaries and Zip CodeNorth: 46th Street Zipcodes: 55409, 55419 HistoryIn 1886, William Washburn (the milling and lumber tycoon and former US Senator from Minnesota) and other investors bought 200 acres of farmland near Minnehaha Creek for a wealthy residential development to be called Washburn Park. However, tough economic times stalled the development and the property was sold in the early 1900s with development continuing through the 1920s. Housing Styles and TypesWhile most homes in Tangletown were constructed between 1910 – 1920s and are in the Period Revival styles of that time (Tudor, Colonial, etc)--there are also Victorian homes from the 1880s, the city’s largest cluster or Lustron metal houses (built in the late 1940s out of pre-fabricated steel to house returning World War veterans) along Nicollet Avenue, as well as modernist homes from the 1950s that were built along Minnehaha Creek.
