In 1852 the first shingle mill in Hennepin County was built near the mouth of the creek, giving the neighborhood its name—and workers from the nearby lumbermills began to settle in the area. The neighborhood was also one of the first African American neighborhoods in the growing metropolis of Minneapolis in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
