St. Anthony Park is an urban village situated between the downtowns of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, known for its community activism and strong neighborly bonds. It also enjoys a unique global perspective, thanks in large part to the international students, faculty and families connected to the campuses of the University of Minnesota and Luther Seminary. The community takes special pride in its two public schools, St. Anthony Park Elementary and Murray Junior High, which regularly rank among the top schools in the metro area. The community is home to a rich collection of educational, religious, social service, arts institutions and the St. Anthony Park Foundation which is the city of St. Paul’s first neighborhood-based charitable foundation. Neighbors and shoppers from throughout the Twin Cities can take advantage of two vibrant business districts, in North St. Anthony Park, near the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus, and in South St. Anthony Park, near University Ave. and its thriving art galleries and artists’ studios. HistorySettlement of the St. Anthony Park area began around the year 1850. Before that, the region had been a rolling, wooded wilderness crossed by several trails used by Native Americans and pioneers. In 1873, Horace S. Cleveland designed a plan for a suburban addition to St. Paul and Minneapolis of large, country estates and winding streets that followed the topography of the area. Today, the size of the lots is considerable smaller than in Cleveland's design, but the hills and curving streets remain one of the unique features of St. Anthony park.
