The West Seventh neighborhood is an eclectic mix of historic homes and modern riverfront condominiums; long-time neighborhood establishments and new neighborhood gathering spots; booming entertainment in Seven Corners near downtown and quiet residential areas throughout. The neighborhood has miles of trails flanking the Mississippi that connect to downtown, excellent schools, a burgeoning arts scene, and one-of-a-kind shopping, dining, and entertainment venues along the West Seventh/Fort Road corridor. West Seventh is also home to some of Saint Paul’s most historic homes in the Irvine Park neighborhood (one of Saint Paul’s designated historic districts). The neighborhood has great access to downtown Saint Paul, MSP airport, and the surrounding suburbs—and is served by high frequency transit along West Seventh Street. HistoryThe West Seventh Street area was one of the first in Saint Paul to be settled as discharged soldiers from Fort Snelling and other pioneers built cabins along the Mississippi during the 1830s. Residential development continued throughout the 1800s as immigrants from many parts of Europe came to work at the breweries, foundries, factories, and railroads along the river. Commercial development followed—clustering along Fort Road (West 7th)—following the streetcar and concentrating near downtown. Many exceptional examples of this early architecture can be found throughout the neighborhood. Housing Styles and TypesThe neighborhood contains a tremendous concentration of larger brick and wood frame houses (as well as rowhouses and double houses) dating from the 1870’s through the turn of the century in Italianate, Queen Anne, Eastlake, and Colonial Revival and other styles. There are also Prairie Style homes, modest Four squares, and modern, newly constructed condos and apartments along the riverfront, close to downtown. SchoolsPublic Schools:
